About the Artist

Born in 1942 Leonard Hollands studied art initially at the Heston and Isleworth Evening Institute whilst also an architectural trainee, and then, on a one to one basis, under Bertram Armitage, son of Alfred Armitage, minor artist of the Newlyn School.

Pursuing a career in architecture and surveying, and from 1971 when he was ordained, also in the Church, his painting had to be part time, although always a consuming passion, but in 2003 he began to paint full time.

He is first and foremost a Wildlife Artist, his special interest, as a life-long ornithologist, being bird paintings in which he endeavours to create an “alive” image (some of these images have been used as cards for the RSPB of which he is a Life Fellow). He goes to great lengths to sketch birds in the field before embarking on paintings in the studio. Taking his inspiration from the marvels of Creation, however, he also paints abstracts and landscapes. These are striking, being painted boldly and more freely than his more carefully worked wildlife studies. His work, therefore, is varied and of wide appeal. He works mainly in oil and acrylic and sometimes in gouache or digital airbrush. However, he often works in inventive mixed media, especially in his abstracts.

He participates in Dorset Art Weeks and Bridport & West Dorset Open Studios, and has exhibited in the West Country, as well as having work placed in various galleries. His work, including commissions, is in various private collections. He has also illustrated three wildlife books.

Outside of Dorset Art Weeks and Bridport & West Dorset Open Studios, the Studio is frequently open, especially in the summer, and visitors are very welcome, or it can be visited at any reasonable time by prior appointment.

Original paintings range from around £25 to £1200. A selection of mounted prints is available at reasonable prices. Cards and notelets from £1.50. Printed mugs and T-shirts are also available.

Commissions are accepted for subjects with which the artist feels an affinity.

As a Celtic Orthodox priest, Father Leonard finds a deep and rewarding connection between his Faith and his Art. Those interested in learning more about the Celtic Orthodox Church will find a link on the LINKS page of this website. Be blessed!
